Donald Gary “Red” Melton, age 70, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on June 5, 2020. Red was well-known in the community as the owner of Valley Motors, but those who knew him well knew he was an accident waiting to happen. If he had a lawnmower, at some point it had been on top of him. If he had a tractor, it had been flipped. If he worked on anything in the garage, he usually ended up accidentally rolling it over the embankment beside the house or catching the house on fire. If he had a burn pile, you could bet on a random explosion heard miles away.
Red was a member of South Whitwell Baptist Church. He was led to the Lord by Roy Terry, and he cherished their friendship.
Above all, Red cherished his family. Red worked tirelessly to provide a good life for his wife and children—and he did just that.
Red was preceded in death by his brother, Ronald D. Melton and parents, James & Dorothy Melton.
Those left to cherish his memories are his wife of 47 years, Tina Layne Melton; two daughters, Farrah “Buffy” & Jon Morrison, Kirsten & Barrett Long; sisters, Vicky Clark, Kris Melton, Vonda Hoge, Sharon Kim, Karen McGowan; brother, Tracy Melton; two grandchildren, Ian Morrison & Kasen Long; granddaughter at heart, Katelyn Johnson.
Graveside services will be at 12 noon, Sunday, June 7, 2020, at Whitwell Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Roy Terry officiating. Pallbearers will be Barrett Long, Jon Morrison, Kenneth Johnson, Steve Long, Tracy Melton, Ian Morrison; Honorary pallbearer will be Kasen Long.
