James Nelson Obituary

James Thomas (Jim) Nelson, 79, of Whitwell went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 18, 2025. Jim was a man of faith, a kind and gentle soul, and was loved by all who knew him. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and cherished friend to many. He was a member of Ewtonville Baptist Church.

Born on September 7, 1946 to the late Patricia Ann Creel, Jim grew up in Mobile, Alabama. He proudly served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam War from March 1, 1966 to February 28, 1969. In 2007, he was presented the Achievement Medal for Civilian Service from the Department of the Army, recognizing his outstanding performance with the Nashville District Corps of Engineers (1978-2008). In particular, his leadership as Facility Manager at Nickajack Lock set the standard across the District. His contribution to major electrical repairs to many of the District’s locks tremendously improved the performance and safe operations of the projects. His excellent leadership and consistent positive attitude ensured all mission goals were achieved. Jim also served in the Tennessee Army National Guard, 212th Engineer Company, Dunlap, TN from 1985-91, including service during Desert Storm in 1990-1991.

In retirement, Jim enjoyed working alongside his daughter, Dawn, lending a hand in her chicken houses and various projects. A skilled electrician and the ability to fix anything, he was the family’s go-to source for advice and was known for generously offering his expertise to relatives and friends.

Jim is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Gayla Rankin Nelson, and their three children: Dawn Nelson (Steven Fiorenti) of Whitwell, Danny (Laci) Nelson of Dunlap, Lori Nelson of Whitwell; grandchildren, Seth (Megan) Rankin of Whitwell, Gunnar and Cannon Nelson of Dunlap, Daisy and Lily Oliver of Whitwell; brother, David (Monica) Cantrell of Mobile, AL; sister, Becky Megginson of Thomasville, AL; his beloved dog, Honey; several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Visitation for friends and family will be held from 3-8:00 pm CDT on Friday, September 19 at Whitwell Memorial Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at the Chattanooga National Cemetery with Pastor Brian Kearns officiating on Monday, September 22 at 12:00 NN CDT.
