John Neal Basham died peacefully on, Friday, January 31, 2025, age 68. Johnny was a member of Cumberland Mountain Church of God where he taught Sunday school for many years. He retired with 35 years from McKee Foods, before he was a coal miner for 11 years at TCC. John was preceded in death by his daughter, Adrienna Shawn Basham and son, John Shannon Basham; parents, John and Willene Basham; brother, Col. Jeff Basham; nephew, Byron Basham; great nephews, Alexander Paul Hatfield and Beau Oliver Gilliam.
Johnny was known for his love for God and family. His wife, Beverly, has been deeply loved by Johnny for over 50 years. They birthed, reared and buried two children and his faith in God grew stronger. He was papa to Maria, who was the light of his life. He couldn’t speak her name without smiling. His siblings counted on him to laugh and encourage them in all they did. “Uncle Johnny” became the favorite for his nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews. He and Beverly claimed them all as their own. These will miss his teddy bear personality, huge smile, laughs and conversations.
Those left to cherish his memories are his wife of 50 years, Beverly Basham; granddaughter, Maria Shawn Basham both of Whitwell; his siblings, Stanley Hatfield of King’s Mountain, North Carolina; Jim (Vickie) Basham of Chattanooga, Donnie (Yvonne) Bird, Jerry (Yvette) Basham all of Whitwell; Rosetta (Zoran) Lazic of Toronto, Canada; sister-in-law, Inez Basham of Butler, Alabama; several nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews.
